Website migration

Moving to a new host or a new platform without losing your Google rankings, your email, or a day of sales.

Why people move

Clients usually come to me for a migration for one of three reasons. Their hosting has become slow or expensive. They've outgrown their platform, often Wix or an old WordPress setup. Or they want to move their store to Shopify.

The worry is always the same: what if something breaks? Most of my work in a migration goes into making sure nothing does.

What's covered

  • Host to host moves for WordPress, WooCommerce and custom PHP sites, including files and databases
  • Platform moves, such as WordPress to Shopify, WooCommerce to Shopify or Wix to WordPress
  • Products, customers and orders carried over wherever the platforms allow it
  • 301 redirects from every old URL to its new address, so rankings and old links keep working
  • Email accounts and DNS records moved without losing mail
  • SSL set up on the new server before the switch

How I avoid downtime

  1. Back up everythingA full copy of your files and database is taken before anything else happens.
  2. Copy and testThe site is set up on the new host or platform and tested on a temporary address, while your current site stays live.
  3. Map every URLEach old page gets a redirect to its new home, so nothing ends up as a dead link.
  4. Switch at a quiet timeI shorten the DNS refresh time in advance so the change spreads quickly, switch over when your traffic is low, then keep an eye on forms, email and search for the following days.

What you'll notice

If it goes well, not much. Your site works the same day, your email keeps arriving, and your customers carry on as normal.

Behind the scenes you'll usually have a faster site, cheaper or more reliable hosting, and a tidy list of where everything now lives.

Common questions

Will I lose my Google rankings?

Not if redirects and page content are handled properly, which is the main part of my job in a migration. Small ups and downs for a week or two can happen while Google re-crawls the site, then things settle.

What happens to my business email?

I copy your email and DNS records exactly, and move the mailboxes too if your email provider is changing. Mail keeps arriving throughout.

Can you move my store to Shopify with products and customers?

Yes. Products, collections, customers and order history can be imported. Customers will need to set a new password, because passwords can't be transferred between platforms. I'll help you send them a friendly email about it.

How do we get started?
